Horizons Charter School The Montessori curriculum at Educational Horizons Charter School empowers each student to take the lead in his or her education. While fostering a lifelong love of learning, the Montessori environment encourages independent learning and the development of problem-solving skills. Here, teachers structure the curriculum around the interests of students capturing their attention and imagination for better retention. Offering a community-like setting, Educational Horizons Charter School has small class sizes and fewer classrooms than a traditional school. Teachers get to know parents as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each student. Learners work together in multi-age groups that let the older students mentor the younger ones. Each multi-age classroom contains a Montessori teacher and a reading teacher. Students who are struggling with certain subjects can receive the extra help they need through special programs such as math club for math difficulties and the Barton Reading Program to improve reading skills. With Montessori curriculums, students learn abstract concepts through hands-on activities such as “the Stamp Game,” a Montessori math manipulative that teaches division or “the Language Tower,” where students build using shapes that identify parts of speech. An annual research project gives students the opportunity to learn about the life and times of a distinguished person of their choice. Students practice research and public-speaking skills in a timeline presentation for family and classmates. Visual and performing arts classes — including music and violin classes as well as physical education — work to engage the whole brain for both critical and creative thinking. Outside of the classroom, students develop important life skills through team sports including soccer, basketball and cheerleading. 1281 S.
