Odyssey Charter School

As Florida’s first healthy high-performance school, students learn at their peak performance using a curriculum that combines the best of Montessori and brain-based learning. The school facility opened in 2005 with features that promote the well-being of students such as naturally day lit classrooms, superior air quality and classical music playing in the hallways.

State and Montessori certified teachers and low student/teacher ratios help instructors foster the talents, interests and aptitudes of each student. Here, the focus is on the development of the whole child by achieving a balance of intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and social growth. Through hands-on learning, students make connections between academic concepts and the real world. In the science discovery lab, students see theories, ideas and information come to life as they conduct experiments and participate in recycling programs. The garden courtyards have much to teach students about nature and earth sciences through activities in the native plant, organic and butterfly gardens.

While younger students in kindergarten through 3rd grade build on what motivates them in a highly individualized Montessori-based curriculum, students in grades 4 through 8 take a more research-based approach to learning. At all grade levels, written, spoken, artistic and cultural literacy are important. Students develop reading skills through a phonics-based program called the Spalding Method of Reading and Writing and study classical literature in the Junior Great Books program and Open Court Reading. Cultural studies include Spanish language classes and participation in the school’s annual international festival. Students also experience the visual and performing arts through drama, dance and music classes and regular visits from guest artists.
