Central Middle School International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP)
Students enrolled in the Central Middle School IB/MYP pursue an international education distinguished by student-centered inquiry, international understanding, responsible citizenship, academic challenge, and life skills development. They build intercultural awareness by examining ideas, events, and experiences at the local and global levels. They grow communication skills to share ideas about how to build a better world. They study an integrated curriculum of mathematics, English, science, humanities, world language, technology and physical education to uncover connections in the web of knowledge. They become lifelong learners able to grasp concepts, develop flexibility in thinking, transfer learning from abstract theory to real-world practice, and retain learning through application.
The IB/MYP makes learning relevant for young adolescents by integrating curriculum through five Areas of Interaction (AOI). Through the Approaches to Learning AOI, students learn “how to learn” and discover their personal learning styles. Through the Community and Service AOI, students look at problems in the world and decide how to make a difference. Through the Homo Faber (Human Ingenuity) AOI, students explore how positive thought and action produce ideas and products to improve the quality of life. Through the Environment AOI, students analyze how human activity impacts the physical world. Through the Health and Social Education AOI, students analyze how thought, emotion, and action impact health and psychological well-being. The Central Middle School IB/MYP is designed for young adolescents to acquire knowledge, grow understanding, develop skills, and build character that will pave the way for a successful transition to any high school program or academy--district-wide and beyond.
