High School For students who would like to graduate from high school with both a high school diploma and a university-transfer Associate in Arts (AA) degree, the expanded Collegiate High School program may be the right choice. In partnership with Brevard Community College (BCC), Brevard Public Schools offers this unique educational opportunity to qualified high school students who are ready for the challenge of college. College credits earned at BCC transfer to any of Florida’s public universities provided that the receiving university offers the same course with the same course number. Collegiate High School students spend part of their school day at BCC taking college courses that satisfy both high school graduation and AA degree requirements. Students spend the rest of the school day at their high schools completing other required coursework. In the Collegiate High School students have the best of both worlds: an opportunity to participate in academic and co-curricular activities at both high school and college. The School Board provides required college textbooks, and BCC waives all tuition and fees associated with the Collegiate High School. Limited roundtrip busing for sophomores in fall and spring terms is provided between the high schools and BCC; juniors and seniors may need to provide their own transportation in order to complete the courses needed to meet the prerequisites of their intended university majors. The application process for the Collegiate High School begins in January of the ninth grade year. Admission to the program is competitive and based on student’s grade point average on high school coursework, college admissions test scores and a demonstrated ability to succeed in a challenging academic environment. The Collegiate High School program is currently available at Astronaut, Bayside, Cocoa, Eau Gallie, Melbourne, Merritt Island, Palm Bay, and Satellite High Schools. In 2008-2009 Space Coast Jr./Sr. High and Viera High will be implementing Collegiate High Schools. Please contact the guidance departments at these schools to learn more.
