Palm Bay High School Law Academy

A courtroom, law library and forensic lab set the scene for aspiring lawyers, judges and law enforcement personnel wanting a head start on a law-related career track. The Robert L. Donaldson Sr. Academy of Law and Public Safety at Palm Bay High School is a career-focused curriculum for students in grades 9th through 12th. This “A” rated school by the Florida Department of Education has a staff of experienced professionals in the legal and public safety fields teaching college-level courses in criminal justice. From crime scene investigations to Mock Trial Competitions, students experience the real world of the courts, the criminal law and public safety. The Law Academy has partnerships with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments as well as the Brevard County Bar Association to provide students with internship opportunities and field experiences. Students also have the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee and Washington D.C. on field trips as well as compete in Moot Court competitions with the opportunity to argue before the Fifth District Court of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court.

All seniors attending the Law Academy put together a capstone project demonstrating what they’ve learned by solving a government problem. Students’ first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of government comes from required community service in programs such as “Teen Court” run by the State Attorney’s Office. Students can earn up to 24 post secondary credits from Brevard Community College through a combination of required classes and Dual Enrollment courses. Whether plans are to attend a two-year college, a four-year university or enroll in a law enforcement or legal training program, the Law Academy provides students with the academic background and workplace exposure for success.
