Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School of the Arts

Students perform academically and artistically at this “A” rated school, one of three Millennium Elementary Schools of Choice in Brevard County. With strong Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts programs, students receive expert instruction and comprehensive exposure to all of the arts. Research has shown that learning through the arts improves academic performance. Drama, Dance and Music help develop early literacy by involving children in reading and writing as a meaningful communication process.

The focus is on Science, Technology and Math with a faster paced learning track for Gifted/Accelerated students. Students follow an arts-infused curriculum that teaches major subjects and emphasizes good character.

In the Music program, students learn to master just about any musical instrument of their choosing from strings and wind instruments to the piano keyboard. Students develop their talents in a variety of music settings, ensembles and performance opportunities including Show Choir, Concert Band, Orff Ensembles and String Orchestra. While learning musical theory and how to play an instrument, students are able to make connections to all other subjects. For example, Vocals and Yamaha Keyboard classes use interdisciplinary strategies that cross the entire curriculum from Language Arts to Physical Education.

In the Dance and Drama program, students get their minds and bodies active for better attention and retention in the classroom. By participating in a variety of dance classes students learn controlled movement and how to work in a cooperative group setting. Each grade level also produces at least one play during the school year to demonstrate what they’ve learned in a subject area.

The Visual Arts program provides a foundation in Art History and Multicultural Studies. Students can take ceramics classes, graphic design, 3-D art and much more. Parental involvement is key to the school’s success and all parents of enrolled students are required to contribute volunteer hours.
