Stone Middle School Science and Technology

This leading science and technology program and its students garner more awards than most middle schools in the State of Florida. It’s also one of the few schools where 7th and 8th grade students work on high-tech research projects in Robotics, Digital Media, Forensics, Aquaculture and Ecology — curriculum that is typically reserved for older students. Students use the latest technological tools found in the workplace including pioneering web technologies, wireless networking and video conferencing.

This all adds up to unique hands-on experiences. In a typical school year, students might design and build remotely-operated submersibles, participate in robotics and forensics or learn video production, claymation, mini-documentary filmmaking and other multimedia techniques. Students routinely take field trips to Key Largo for coral reef studies as well as the Astronaut Hall of Fame and Kennedy Space Center for simulated space shuttle missions using motion-based training simulators.

The school attracts students interested in high-tech inquiry in the sciences through project-based learning. It has one of the largest collections of science labs in the district and several specialized facilities including an aquaculture lab and a biotechnology/microbiology lab. As one of the first schools to offer campus-wide wireless internet access, it remains on the cutting edge of technology and science instruction. Four full time computer labs and two mobile laptop labs give students daily access to computers. Students even have the opportunity to earn high school credit in some courses.

Students gain a well-rounded learning and life experience through exposure to the Visual and Performing Arts, Foreign Language, Applied Technology, sports programs and much more. Brain time is balanced with game time through team sports such as bowling, boys and girls basketball and track, and spirit squad.
