Career & Technical Education

From criminal justice to culinary arts, medical careers and much more, career aspirations become reality with Career & Technical Education. These career and technical courses are available at many Brevard County public high schools and provide workplace experience and career-related skills.

Much like college, students in 10th through 12th grades choose a major field of study — such as business, health occupations, family and consumer sciences, marketing, public service, industrial or technology education. Students take elective courses along with core academic subjects to develop job-related knowledge and marketable skills.

Students can choose to specialize in a field or sample different careers.  For example, students may take medical coursework as elective classes for hands-on simulated medical procedures and career exploration. They also participate in clinical experiences at hospitals and learn from guest speakers.

Career & Technical Education programs are designed to give students a head start on a high-paying career. If the student’s neighborhood school doesn’t offer a particular field of study, he or she can opt to take Career & Technical Education electives at a participating school either full-time or part-time at no additional cost. Some Career & Technical Education programs offer dual enrollment classes on a high school campus or at a postsecondary institution where students earn college credit towards a certificate or degree.  Others might choose to participate in an internship program, receive on-the-job training, work with a mentor and even earn industry credential.

One of the program’s biggest draws is the Gold Seal Scholarship for students who excel in their Career & Technical Education electives and academics. This is a two-year scholarship at a Florida postsecondary institution. Graduates of Career & Technical Education programs are also eligible for additional scholarships, continued participation in apprenticeship programs and postsecondary technical credit.
